This is a sculpture from one of Keith Ho's personal projects, Journey to the West. The final mesh contains 19,000 polygon faces. It took approximately eight hours to digitize the model using the MicroScribe in 3D Studio MAX 2.5 via the plug-in Scribe-iT.

The MicroScribe decreased the modeling time greatly; without using MicroScribe, it would have taken a week to create this model. The MicroScribe also allowed for different levels of detail for portions of the model that needed more or less."

"I used Letraline architectural tape to put a grid on the sculpture because it is so small and detailed. This method allows for a clean and highly visible grid.

Step-by-step

Once the grid was in place, the sculpture was 'locked' down on a plate next to the MicroScribe so it wouldn't move during the digitizing process. The MicroScribe® 3D was activated through Scribe-iT in the 3D Studio MAX environment.

Once half of the bull was completed a copy was mirrored and the vertexes were welded together into one mesh. Then a mesh smooth was applied to certain areas to bring up the detail level of the bull.

If I hadn't used the MicroScribe to digitize the sculpture it would have taken me five times as long to create the mesh. The MicroScribe definitely speeds up the modeling process, especially if the project requires an exact match from the physical world to the 3D environment."
