Mold Making

A Malaysian company specializing in luxury office furniture uses the MicroScribe, VisiCAD, and Alphacam to create molds. Except when completing their own designs, they get a sample from customers and have to make the mold to press laminated wood. The process is shown below.

The MicroScribe was purchased through Twinsoft: http://www.twinsoft.com.tw

1. The original sample was taken out of a luxury chair and was secured on the middle wooden stand.
2. Grid lines were drawn on the sample and a point was taken at each intersection on the grid with the MicroScribe 3DL. VisiCad was then used to construct the surface and build the core and cavity.
3. The cavity was machined with a 4-axis router vertically. Alphacam was used to generate the toolpath.
4. The core was machined with a titling head (4-axis continuously machining). Alphacam was used to generate the toolpath.
5. The complete mold was put onto the pressing machine ready for production.
